This is the most common type of vulva, yet ironically the one women have historically felt most self-conscious about in the surgeon's experience. Here, the labia minora are longer than the labia majora. Because of the difference in length, the inner lips extend below the outer lips. This can range from a very subtle, slight protrusion to a much more visible one.

If you've got this type of vulva, your labia majora will curve round, exposing the labia minora front-on, but will meet evenly at the bottom like an upside down horseshoe. The labia minora here do not tend to hang below the outer lips.

This is the least common type of vulva, yet the most typically 'desired' one thanks to the fact it's the shape that's most frequently seen in porn - and it's essentially a Barbie vagina. With this kind of vulva, the labia minora are completely contained and hidden inside the labia majora. The outer lips here tend to be more or less flat and rest up against the pubic bone.

This vulva is similar to the one above, given the small lips. The main difference, however, is that here, the labia majora are set further apart, giving the appearance of being 'open' and meaning the labia minora can be visible.

As a result, the labia minora can be seen or felt from the outer labia. While it's common for people with outies to feel self-conscious about their protruding inner lips, it's important to note that this is the most common type of vagina, according to a 2017 study.

Pornography could also have something to do with it, especially when it comes to hurtful comments from male partners. Dr. Hutcherson recalls one patient whose boyfriend told her she had "things hanging down there." (Dude, you have balls, so???) "Pornography is how many young men get introduced to the way a woman looks, but women in pornography are chosen specifically for a certain type of [labial] look," says Dr. Hutcherson. "When you think about it, if you've got very small labia, it's much easier to see what's going on."

If, in fact, something is hanging out of your vaginal opening a little bit, then what that likely is is some residual hymen, the thin tissue that when you're younger, covers the vaginal opening, but which as you develop, wears away. It's normal for it to sometimes wear away in such a way that some of that tissue hangs around like that, and in time, it'll wear away further to the point where it's not visible anymore. It's nothing to be embarrassed about, but since it's not something that has any purpose at all (or nerve endings), and something which is supposed to wear away in time, if it's really bothering you, you can ask a gynecologist to snip it off for you.

If you don't mean your vagina, but mean your vulva, and you're talking about seeing something sticking out of your outer labia -- the two thicker mounds of skin, usually with some hair on them, which meet to cover your vaginal opening, urethra and clitoris -- it's likely that that's just your inner labia -- the fleshy, hairless "lips" that are between your outer labia, and which connect at the top to your clitoral hood -- peeking out. The length, size and shape of inner labia varies between women, and it's perfectly normal to have inner labia that stick out from the outer labia. That's nothing to feel funny about: lots of women have inner labia which aren't totally hidden by the outer labia.
